Since NAIAS hates The Car Blog and wouldn't let us into the Press Preview (more on that later), we were forced to go to the public show and give you guys horrible coverage. Even at that, going to the Detroit show is never a bad thing (going to Detroit in general is another matter), and the authors of The Car Blog definitely had some fun hunting down Mustang "experts" who ended up being models who couldn't tell us anything about the 5.0 and almost crashing electric cars in the Electric Xperience section, even though we weren't even in the cars at the time. Okay, maybe that second part was made up, but all in all our bloggers acted like excited kids for most of the show.

Now to the subject of this post. CT&T, a Korean electric car (car used as a general term here, folks. Most of their models are glorified golf carts) manufacturer that has been pretty much neglected by the general press, came to Detroit as part of the "Electric Avenue", which included things as varied as aforementioned golf carts to the Commuter Cars 850HP Tango to an Automotive X-prize contender dressed up in a Shelby Daytona body. Not many people were watching this company, as they hadn't exceeded expectations in the past, to say the least. But this company brought with them a giant display with a full three debuts, more than most major manufacturers, and their entire current range dressed up for different situations, including an e-ZONE microcar in full police garb.
One of the models CT&T debuted was their new CT&T Multi Amphibious Vehicle, which they will hopefully rename in light of America's literacy rate. This car seems like a disaster waiting to happen when you read about it. It's an all-electric, six-wheeled amphibious vehicle with no roof or doors, which presents many technology and safety issues. First and foremost, this car must be very well-built to ensure that passengers aren't electrocuted in the water or anyone who buys one will see their life insurance rate triple. Second of all, this thing could never be road-legal in the US. It has no shoulder belts, no roof, little side structure, and an inches-high windshield. Because of this, CT&T might as well simply make an all-electric boat since there's no point in having a car-boat that is only legal as a boat. Yet again, people in Beverly Hills don't buy Ferraris to race them, they buy them to say "Hey, I have something you don't!" We'll have to see if any of CT&T's other models can make it in the US, but definitely don't expect this one to. Even if by some miracle it passes regulations, who will buy one? Who ever bought the Corvette-based Ram-faced WaterCar Python or the Hydra Spyder?

BYD, a company famous for its blatant Mercedes-Benz copy, the S8, has been trying to get into the US market for some time. They've made considerable progress towards that goal at the Detroit Auto Show so far, releasing the E6 Electric crossover that's supposedly bound for the US, but one other US debut has been eclipsed by this car, even though it debuted last year. Enter the BYD F3DM. Based off of their last-gen Toyota Corolla-copy sedan, the F3, the F3DM is an all-electric small sedan that starts at about $22,000 in its home market, with technology that should be considered groundbreaking for a Chinese car. In fact, this technology is almost a better system than that in the Chevrolet Volt in that it uses the combined power of the electric motor and a small gas engine to power the car, where the Volt uses the gas engine only in braking. This means the car seems more powerful, if louder. The F3DM debuted as a concept at Detroit last year, but production didn't start until recently. The F3DM is supposedly bound for the United States in 2011. You can see the F3DM and E6 electrics along the Electric Avenue at the Detroit Auto Show this year.

Tata, the company famous for creating the cheapest car on Earth, has been trying to break into the world scene for some time with both more microcars for their home market, India, and larger cars bound for the rest of the world. One of these larger new car concepts is the Tata Pr1ma, an attractive compact sedan with dimensions almost exactly like the Volkswagen Jetta. The company contracted the famed design house of Pininfarina to design the car, and the results were great. The concept was first shown at the 2009 Geneva Auto Salon, and it showed most of the world that Tata was a more formidable up-and-coming force to be dealt with, at least stylistically. If the Pr1ma was to come to the US as a production model, it would be a major force in the compact market. Though it doesn't quite fit in with the sporty econoboxes that make up most of the current US compact market, that is definitely not a bad thing. This smallish sedan gives the impression of a much higher-class vehicle, showing that Pininfarina design makes a big difference.

But the Pininfarina lines also pose a problem. Though the car definitely has its own style, that style is achieved by combining aspects of cars in almost every segment. If you look at the side, the profile reminds one of a Lexus GS, the grille design recalls the Opel Insignia, and the trunk looks like a stylized Acura RL trunk or more recently that of a Suzuki Kizashi. So, overall, the Tata Pr1ma is a great-looking compact sedan, but not distinctive enough from luxury sedans, of which it definitely isn't. I'm not saying it should look worse, but that maybe the next generation should be more...different.

It's no secret that The Car Blog is constantly gaining more and more ground on the Internet, and we've decided to introduce annual awards this year. We've been going back and forth with ideas for Best DIY Project, Worst Performer of the Year, and this award, the Best New Automaker of the Year. We were going back and forth mainly between Devon, Artega, Zenovo, Fisker, and our winner, Tesla. We had many reasons to pick Tesla as our winner. First of all, Devon, Artega, and Zenovo haven't made any production cars yet and Devon is based off of Dodge Viper components. This left Fisker and Tesla. We chose Tesla because they have had major sales success and made many gains in technology. Though the Fisker may look better in your opinion, the Tesla has made more strides and good sales, meaning they have a constant flow of money. For these and many more reasons, Tesla is our award winner this year.

This award isn't just about the cars, it's about the company also, so we will start our honors there. Tesla Motors was founded by the inventor of PayPal, a Silicon Valley programmer named Elon Musk. He quickly and efficiently developed the Roadster using knowledge he learned at Pinnacle Research and secured a $50 Million partnership with Daimler. Another honorable mention is Tesla's Chief Technical Officer, JB Straubel. With two degrees from Stanford, this Wisconsin native is a mechanical genius specializing in electric propulsion. He is one of the major brains behind the company's vehicles and the co-founder.
Now to the part that people care about: The cars. With one successfully-launched model and another on the way, Tesla has had no minor success for a new company in engineering and producing vehicles. The technology packed into these cars is frankly amazing. Tesla uses innovative packaging and new materials to make a lightweight, fast electric production vehicle that provides a driving experience unlike any other automobile on the market today. And the company isn't stopping at the Roadster. On the way in early 2011 is the Model S, and all-electric sedan with a 300-mile range (take that, Volt!) and 5.6-second acceleration to 60. And with the sales success of the Roadster, Tesla can pack even more advanced technology into this new model. Things are looking up for Tesla, and hopefully they will live up to this honor.

  I'm excited because I get the satisfaction of reporting this before Autoblog or Jalopnik, which I both sent tips to. I was getting stuff ata local gas station when a guy who obviously has a sense of humor pulls up in a 2001 Buick Century Custom. The catch? It had hybrid badges all over it! Each front fender had a GM Hybrid badge on it, which reminded me of a Rolls-Royce with hybrid badges I saw on Autoblog a few weeks ago. The car even went a step farther, with little 2-mode badges on it on a logo on the back of the car. I immediately snapped some photos and sent in some tips to a few major automotive blogs. But I still get the satisfaction of being the first to report on this, this thing.

With Obama pushing 35 MPG by 2016 for cars, many enthusiasts are worried about their next-gen supercars being limited to only 100 MPH to meet the standards. Of course, there is merit in that thought, as we all know from the late seventies. But I know that there are ways to meet and beat these standards while keeping our cars muscular and quick, ways that weren't even a forming idea in an engineer's head during the malaise era. Here are some ideas to get us through the CAFE standards fast: I mean seriously fast, not to mention in style.


1: My first idea to get us through CAFE with a bang is a system already used on a car from a startup Texas-Based supercar manufacturer named Ronn Motor Company, which uses it to get 40 MPG out of its Scorpion supercar. This system, which Ronn Motor Company calls H2-Go, is made up of hydrogen fuel injection to optimize economy. If this technology was used in the mainstream auto industry on such cars as the Mustang or Corvette, it could launch us into CAFE with ease.

2: This one I call the Lotus Formula because it is a hallmark of all of the cars from Colin Chapman's company since the Lotus Six was conceived. This strategy pairs light weight with power and torque that is not too over-the top to create a quick car that is nimble around corners, accelerates in only a few seconds, and above all is economical for today's standards. You could also tweak this and create a monster by putting in a vintage 600-horsepower 1-liter Ferrari racing motor or a similar, but cheaper design in a lightweight car such as the Ariel Atom or a Lotus Elise.

3: There is another option for all of you who were reading this and thinking the entire time that I'm betraying real brute performance, and you'll be glad to hear it. Just pay your gas-guzzler tax on your Lamborghini. I mean, if you have a Murcielago you're already paying a fortune for it, so you probably don't care all that much about a couple extra grand tacked on to legally enjoy it without hybrid whirring or a light feel. If you love to feel the road in your steering and feel connected through weight with a real burbling high-octane fuel V-8 in front of you, this is your favorite option.

So ignore your fears; There is hope.

If you're a Mercedes-Benz fan or an obsessed car person like me, you've probably heard of Brabus, a famed tuning house for Mercedes-Benz products Anywhere from the SLR Mclaren to the Smart Car. But something you may not have known until now is that Brabus also has a new customization for none other than the Lotus-based, electric Tesla Roadster.

This is a large breakaway for the company, which is so far only known as makers of customized SLR's, S-Classes, Smarts, and other Mercedes-Benzes. But apparently their new Zero Emissions division has entered in a relationship with the American Tesla electric car company. Though mostly just a visual kit with new running lights and a new matte white color, there are a few technical achievements. The wheels and tires that are used on this new vehicle are specifically designed to improve handling, utilizing Brabus' own design for alloy wheels. Another interesting, if odd, feature on the Tesla Brabus is the, in Brabus' words, "Space Sound Generator", which allows you to choose from simulated sounds including a V-8 and a futuristic track called "beam". Overall, this is a visual kit, so don't get thinking that the extra money you spend will make your Tesla that much better performance-wise. But if you want to stand out even just a little more, it would be a good option from a trusted source. Photo from luxurylaunches.com

Leave it to the former, non-Italian Chrysler to try tell us they'll have a fully-functioning electric car company many years ago, and come out with a glorified golf cart that has huge insurance costs per lack of any safety features that supposedly cost billions to develop, called GEM. Top speed? 25 MPH. Range? 40 miles. By then, nobody wants them because of their final design, and Chrysler loses money. This is one reason why the brilliant management of Chrysler failed to work. I've seen one of these vehicles after many years on the market, and I've seen over ten Smart cars since March.

Another reason this new company, Global Electric Motorcars, never took off was because they were not marketed at all. I've seen one official dealership In southern Wisconsin, but in all my trips I've not seen another nor have I seen more than one car from that company. There were no commercials, no newspaper ads. But for a website and a link to it from the Chrysler website, it was as if Global Electric Motors did not exist. This is why GEM doesn't work
One the bright side, they have a performance option that boosts horsepower to seven and an option of doors!

Tesla has just unveiled a new five-passenger electric sedan slated for production in late 2011. It will move into new territory for Tesla, opening up to new buyers with the prices and seating capacity. Tesla is hoping to produce up to 20,000 of these machines each year at around $50,000 after a $7,500 gov't credit on electric cars. It actually runs and goes 0-60MPH in 5.5 seconds.
